Board of Directors
Alice Housing is second-stage non-profit housing for women with or without children. We offer a safe non-judgmental environment for women leaving abusive relationships who have identified their own need for ongoing support and counselling.
Alice Housing provides a nurturing environment for women with or without children who have experienced physical, psychological, sexual or emotional abuse.
Since 1983, Alice Housing has provided a safe refuge to over 850 families.
83% of the women who leave Alice Housing do not return to their abuser. The national average is 69%.
Alice Housing has 19 second and third stage residential units that are secure for women and children fleeing domestic abuse and provided 11,066 shelter nights last year to our clients.
Alice Housing is the largest second-stage housing organization in the Maritime provinces and one of the largest and oldest such organizations in Canada.
Alice Housing receives only 11% of its annual operating budget from all levels of government. Over 40% of the budget must be fund raised throughout the year.
The residential units provided by Alice Housing are safe and affordable, giving the women and children the opportunity to fulfill their potential. Our rental rates are based on the shelter rates of the Department of Community Services and geared to income so that housing fees are never a reason for women not to leave domestic abuse.
Each unit is individually alarmed and monitored 24/7 to provide optimum safety.
Alice Housing hosts workshops on topics of self-esteem, the cycle of abuse, parenting, budgeting, healthy eating, anger management and depression.
Alice Housing provides a drop-in centre which houses a food bank, donations room, resource library and playroom.
Children witness violence against their mothers in at least 40 per cent of violent marriages or common law relationships.
The Healing Bruises children's program offered by Alice Housing helps children recover from witnessing the violence of an abusive home.
